Napa Valley Wine Train Murder Mystery Theater
Once a year the world’s greatest detectives gather at the home of Julius Fox in Napa, but this year for the 10th anniversary they are gathering on the Napa Valley Wine Train. They swap stories, brag of their accomplishments and a few, I’m sorry to say, get drunk, engage in affairs, and behave in a most unseemly manner. Last year, Julius Fox wrote down the best of the members’ stories and had them published. The book, called “The Detectives’ Club,” was an immediate best seller. Under the terms of the contract, any of the eight detectives who are alive at midnight tonight will share in the royalties - $5,000,000. Those who are no longer among the living will receive nothing for their estate

Carnegie Hall, January 16, 1938— The Benny Goodman Orchestra swings its way into big band history. Historic Blacksmith Shop Open House
The Napa County Historical Society will open its historic Haus Blacksmith Shop in Pope Valley on Saturday, April 10, 2010 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Visitors can experience history by stepping inside the doors of the Henry Haus Blacksmith Shop in Pope Valley. Henry Haus opened his blacksmith and wagon shop in 1897, caring for the needs of the Valley until 1950. The building was constructed in 1890 and looks the same as when he closed the doors. This is a once a year opportunity. Hundreds of antique tools, forges, wagons and brands are on display in this rustic shop. Stepping inside the blacksmith shop is a step back in time; a time before our modern conveniences such as electricity, automobiles and televisions. Modern blacksmiths will be on hand to demonstrate the tools of the trade. Pope Valley is filled this time of year with beautiful wildflowers; a perfect setting for a family picnic. It is open to the public FREE of charge, but donations are welcomed. For more information go to www.napahistory.org or call 707-224-1739.

The Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour
The Monterey Jazz Festival has been a nexus for great jazz performances for over 50 years. This tour brings that Monterey magic to Napa, featuring a stunning combination of current jazz greats: Kenny Barron, “one of the top jazz pianists in the world,” according to The LA Times, violinist Regina Carter, who Time Magazine says “takes the listener into the future of jazz,” seven-time Grammy nominee Kurt Elling, whom The San Francisco Chronicle calls “the most flamboyantly creative jazz singer to emerge in the last decade;” and Russell Malone with what All About Jazz calls his “unique guitar voice.” You don’t have to go to Monterey to hear the best in jazz – we’re bringing it to Napa! Elegant playing, sensitive melodies and infectious rhythms inspired The Los Angeles Times to name KENNY BARRON “one of the top jazz pianists in the world” and Jazz Weekly to call him “the most lyrical piano player of our time.” Early in his career, Barron played with Dizzy Gillespie, James Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, Milt Jackson, and Buddy Rich. He now tours and records solo, with his Trio, and with his Brazilian jazz ensemble, Canta Brasil. A 2010 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master (read more) Violinist REGINA CARTER “creates music that is wonderfully listenable, probingly intelligent and, at times, breathtakingly daring – taking the listener into the future of jazz” wrote Time Magazine. She has performed with symphony orchestras across the country, recorded with such artists as Aretha Franklin and Mary J. Blige, and won acclaim for her solos on Wynton Marsalis’ Blood on the Fields tour and Cassandra Wilson’s Travelin’ Miles concert at Lincoln Center. With seven Grammy® nominations and six consecutive years at the top of the Down Beat Critics’ and Jazz Times Readers’ polls, KURT ELLING has attained elite status in the jazz world before reaching the age of 40. His rich baritone voice spans four octaves and displays an astonishing technical facility and emotional depth, inspiring the San Francisco Chronicle to call him “the most flamboyantly creative jazz singer to emerge in the last decade.” A 2010 Grammy Award winner (read more) Guitarist RUSSELL MALONE has toured internationally with Diana Krall, receiving critical acclaim in his role as Diana's right hand both in concert and on her recordings. Russell was a featured performer in Robert Altman's film Kansas City, and has toured or recorded with Harry Connick, Jr., Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, Bucky Pizzarelli, Branford Marsalis, Clarence Carter, Mulgrew Miller, Kenny Barron, Roy Hargrove, Cyrus Chestnut and Patti Austin.

Honoring the Boyets
On Wednesday, April 21st from 5:30-7 pm the Napa County Historical Society will honor two of Napa’s most involved citizens – the dynamic duo of Mary Ellen & George Boyet. The Society will host a reception in their honor at the Society’s headquarters, the Goodman Library Building at 1219 First Street in downtown Napa. How do you know the Boyets? Maybe you attend the pocket opera with them, or play bocce ball or travel to far off lands, are involved in the Society or Napa County Landmarks, or they may have been your teacher at the high school or college. However you know them, you know they are two of a kind and a true value to our community, so join us and raise a glass to George & Mary Ellen! The reception is open to the public and costs $20 per person. RSVP to Kristie at director@napahistory.org by April 10th or buy your tickets online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/100559.

Live at Silo's: Mike Ehlers & Rob Heath
Mike Ehlers writes songs that cover alot of territory, moving from pop to eco-folk-rap, from alt-country to mellow grooves, from story-folk-with-a-punch to ballads born in the depths of a quieted gratitude. A recent first-round winner of a WCS (West Coast Songwriters) competition in Sebastopol CA, he moves on to the semi-finals in August 2010. Originally hailing from Northern Caliornia, Mike recently returned to the Mendocino Coast after spending the past five years in Edmonton, Alberta. While in Canada he gained a faithful local following and recorded most of his debut CD, set to be released in the late spring of 2010.
