The Deen Brothers and Beringer Vineyards are Teaming Up for “The Great Steak Challenge”
So you think you can grill up a mean steak? Then Jamie and
Bobbie Deen (sons of southern cooking queen Paula Deen, and stars of the Food
Network) are giving you a chance to win $15,000 dollars if your sizzle is the
best in the country. “Great
Steak Challenge,” a national grill-off, is on
the hunt for the best backyard combination of taste, creativity and wine
pairing with any varietal of Beringer Wines.
“We’re two brothers and Beringer was started by two brothers
133 years ago,” said Jamie Deen. “It’s a nice fit all around and we are
fortunate enough to be able to do this for Beringer.”
100 contestants chosen from across the
U.S. will advance to one of 10
regional finals. The best from each
region will FLY to
Napa
to compete for the grand prize.
Each Regional Finalist will receive a trip for two to Beringer Vineyards in
stunning
NapaValley,
including transportation, 4 days and 3 nights' hotel accommodations and exclusive
winery tours at Beringer's historic estate and other historic
NapaValley
sites.
Qualified judges from the Food and Wine world,
including Food Network Stars and regional cuisine experts the Deen Brothers,
will be on hand to judge the final grill-off in
Napa at Beringer Vineyards on October 8,
which will be open to the public.
One winner, one runner-up, and one second runner-up will be selected as
Beringer's Great Steak Challenge winners.
“We’re looking for the everyday guy who can put the seasoning on top of a
steak, come up with a great topping and pair it with a great Beringer Wine,”
said Jamie Deen.
The brothers recently spent a weekend at Beringer in
St.
Helena, learning about wine pairing from Beringer Executive Chef
Jerry Comfort and visiting students at the Culinary
Institute of
America
(CIA).
“We had the best meal with Beringer’s 1996 Cab,” said Jamie. “It was like a
south Georgia church hymn going down your throat. We also learned so much about
wine and food pairing, that food changes the way you taste wine.”
With three best-selling books,
countless television appearances and a show of their own, Jamie and Bobby, with
their model good looks, quick wit, and individual style, are becoming a
stand-alone brand complementing the success of their mom.
The brothers have traveled the
country seeking out the best cuisine for their TV show Road Tasted.
“Every region has something they
can be proud of,” said Jamie. “But when it comes to steak and grilling, we have
to look to the center of our country because of their tradition with beef. If
the recipe is original, takes risks, has a savior topping and goes well with a
Beringer Wine, it could be our winner.”
Unfortunately,
California residents are exempt from the
contest because of a state ruling that alcohol and contests may not be paired
together. That doesn’t mean a family member from another state can’t enter the
recipe.
Deadline to enter your recipe is June 30. Go to www.greatsteakchallenge.com
